Its About Time

Hey guys, its been way too long since i have posted. Basically spent 3 days straight playing and clocking LA Noire, then bought and thrashed Witcher 2 for another 2 days. Also had my birthday on Wednesday which meant a flat party on the 14th and a soccer team party on the 21st, both of which contained ALOT of drinking xD. Unfortunately this left me way behind on my Uni work/assignments and I've been working hard trying to catch up!

I should be back to posting every other day in a few days once I've cleared up all my assignments and class work. Future plans are a few basic reviews for Witcher 2, LA Noire and Terraria (few friends just bought it so I'm going to join them between study sessions). I will also talk about one of my other passions, music. My tastes are a little all over the place, but hopefully i can keep it short.

On that subject i will leave you with one of my current favorites.

Past the Brink, clear sailing now

Hey guys, sorry its taken a bit for me to write up another post. Brink came out a day early... by design from what i've heard, just Steam lying to us haha (I'm not complaining). The Brinkathon started early and it went for a bit longer than expected, plus while i was there i was getting a Blogger error and couldn't write up a post while i was at my mates flat.

So... Brink. Get through the bugs and the problematic "Server not responding" steam error, and it's just pure fun. I will state this now, Brink isn't CoD, you don't put your cross-hair on your enemy then they die. More often that not if you jump out in front of someone and you get into a spam melee, the victor is decided by a few things. Weapon choice, body type and quake-like reflexes... but mostly luck. The weapons, particularly the SMG's (i mostly played light body type, loved the movement) have a habit of emptying 30 bullets in 2-3 seconds, which means its luck as to whether the bullets are landing on the enemy or just zipping past them. The recoil is controlled by the mentioned quake-like reflexs, lacking those and the enemy won't be dead by the time you need to reload.

So how do you win?
Tactics.

Tactics, stratergy and teamwork is what is needed to win. On every level there is at least one choke, killzone or easily defended area that the attacking team must break through/down. Countless times i have seen the attacking team throw everything that they have at a single entrance to a room they have an objective in, when if they took a step back to think "wait, this isnt working, lets find another way" at least 3 more entrances, backdoors or flanking positions that can be used to gain an advantage on the defending team would be found.

Quite often i've flanked a defending team holding a choke and ive unloaded into the 5-7 defenders standing in the same place, dropping them all before they even realize where the gunfire came from, allowing my team to push forward and complete/escort their objective.

I'd have to recommend this game to everyone wanting an FPS online experience where teamwork is required to become to victor. Unless quick patches are released to deal with the many bugs, i don't think i can recommend this game to the casual FPS gamer or anybody just looking for the next 'new' FPS game. But anyway, i must return to my assignments that are holding me back from playing Brink 24/7.

Also, just "preordered" Witcher 2 which is due out tomorrow. My next post will probably be a personal review like this one.

On the Brink of Insanity

46 hours. Only 46 hours do i have to wait till Brink is unlocked on Steam. Then, assuming i can get some help moving my stuff, my mates and I are going to be having a bit of a Brink marathon at one of their flats. An event normally associated with the release of an MMO, such as it did with Warhammer and Rift, but this is the first non-MMO to receive the honor of a release day marathon.

Granted, being as injured as I am, it won't have the... mobility that it normally has. This marathon will include dinner at the most delicious Asian food cafe i have tasted (if your ever in palmy, Bean Cafe is where you want to eat!) with breakfast at KFC/McD's. Between meals we will have all the snack foods you can think of... sounds so deliciously unhealthy...

So Brink, mixed responses so far by the 'major' reviewers. It seems the main complaints are the AI of the bots, inspiring teamwork is like herding cats and the repetitive of the levels and missions. First off, i will be playing Brink online only and i will mostly with my mates so the first two issues are mostly mute... but this repetitiveness claim. Hmm, this is coming from the same reviewers that call Halo, CoD and Battlefield, all of which have their own elements of repetitiveness, games sent from heaven itself. Now i'm not going to 'attack' these reviewers, they are entitled to their opinions, but the slight smell of hypocrisy is enough for these reviews to not kill my buzz on the Brink release.

Come Friday, in New Zealand(i love American midnight steam releases), the world will be able to play and make up it's own minds on Brink. I've always loved you Bethesda, don't let me down.

Your lack of shaving... is very disturbing.

I am disappoint, i actually have a neckbeard... and man, it's freaking itchy! Do i walk through the pain and shave this crap off? Or do i stay in my seat, cradling my knee like a baby and wear my neckbeard with unfounded pride?

Most of the issues i'm having is because i live upstairs in my flat, with everything i need to get up for being downstairs. Now, i'm sure you can imagine what it is like getting up and down stairs with a completely swollen knee joint... you just don't realize how much you rely on your knees until you can't actually use them.

I've been told that the recovery period for hyper-extension of the knee is anywhere between 2-4 weeks... assuming there is no ligament damage, something that i can't get checked out because i'm too stiff...and poor xD. Oh well, its been several years since i received a major injury from my football, at least it isn't a break like last time...

Anyway, i've actually found a small and temporary cure to my boredom, to actually study for the classes i've been missing. So i've actually come to the conclusion that one should not be bored when one has stuff he should really be doing....

Bored Cripple in the PNorth

Well here i am, leg up on my computer desk leaning right back so my knee is higher than my heart (supposedly it helps), icing it every other hour and only moving for food and the bathroom. Some might think that its awesome to have an excuse like this to be lazy, but it really isn't, believe me.

You may sit there and think, "well i would sit at my computer all day and night if i didn't have to go to work/school/sports", hell i use to think this too, but now that i'm essentially trapped here it really isn't that great at all. Sure, it was great for the first day, filling up my time with HoN, Company of Heroes, Dwarf Fortress,
Starcraft II, and all my usual internet bookmarked content.

But after awhile the retardation of the HoN community starts getting to ya, Company of Heroes becomes the same fight everytime, your eyes start to hurt from 6 straight hours of Dwarf Fortress, "you must construct additional pylons" begins to make you cringe and you start to run out of Husky/TotalBiscuit/Day9/Escapist content to watch.

So here is the question, what do you do with you time when you start to feel the ever encroaching feeling of boredom? You think to yourself, "Why couldn't Brink be released last week?! :-(" j/k.
That's right, you create a blog so you can start telling people who care to read your stuff about 'your story' and about how bored you are. Anyway here is the story, i'm a uni student at Massey in Palmerston North, NZ. When ever i'm not at class/studying i'm killing my time with a good variety of games or just surfing the internet. I also love my football(soccer), which unfortunately is the cause of my injury.

Other than that, there isn't much else to me, i have my own philosophy and views on life that i generally keep to myself (may just share them in later posts). I'm not religious but i don't argue with my VERY christian mates. I can talk to and get along very easily with the ladies (single at the moment tho). I suppose i'm just your average guy haha.
